Deviated septum

A bend in the wall that divides the nose into two sides (the septum) is one of the most common causes of a blocked nose.

What is a deviated septum?

The septum is a wall of cartilage and bone in the middle of the nose. Slight bends are very common and cause no trouble. When the bend is large enough to narrow the airway, it causes blockage. It can be present from birth or develop after an injury.

Symptoms

  • Blockage, often worse on one side
  • Mouth breathing and snoring
  • Repeated sinusitis or nosebleeds
  • A feeling of fullness in the face or headache

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made at the examination. Endoscopy shows where the bend is and how severe it is. If the sinuses may be involved, a CT scan can be done.

Treatment: septoplasty

No medicine straightens a septum; sprays can only reduce the swelling that comes with it. A bend that causes symptoms is corrected with septoplasty. The operation is done from inside the nose with no outside incision or scar and usually takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.

The bent parts of cartilage and bone are removed or reshaped and placed in the midline. If needed, the turbinates are reduced in the same operation.

Recovery

WHENWHAT TO EXPECT
Day 1Most people go home the same day or the next day.
Days 5–7Splints are removed and breathing starts to ease.
Week 2Back to daily life and desk work.
Months 1–2Healing inside the nose is complete and sport is allowed.

Times are averages and vary from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

Does septoplasty change how my nose looks?

No. Septoplasty works on the inside of the nose and does not change its outer shape on its own.

Is the operation painful?

Pain is usually mild to moderate and controlled with painkillers. The blocked feeling in the first days is what bothers people most.

Can the bend come back?

Rarely, especially after a new injury or if tissue shifts during healing.

Is septoplasty done in children?

Because the nose is still growing, it is done in children only for clear symptoms and in a limited way. The decision depends on the examination.
