What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty reshapes the bone and cartilage of the nose. The aim is a nose in balance with the rest of the face. Because ENT surgeons also operate on the inside of the nose, cosmetic wishes and breathing problems can be assessed together.
Who is it for?
- People bothered by a hump, a crooked nose, a drooping tip or a wide nose
- People whose nose changed shape after an injury
- People who also find it hard to breathe through the nose
- Adults whose facial growth is complete, with realistic expectations and good general health
Examination and planning
At the first visit the outside and the inside of the nose are examined, with endoscopy if needed. We talk about your expectations and look at possible changes on photographs. If there is a breathing problem, it is included in the surgical plan.
How is the operation done?
The operation is done under general anaesthesia and usually takes 2 to 4 hours. An open or closed technique is chosen depending on the nose. In the open technique a small incision is made in the skin between the nostrils; in the closed technique all incisions stay inside the nose. Which technique fits is decided at the examination.
Most patients stay in hospital for one night.
Recovery timeline
| WHEN | WHAT TO EXPECT |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Observation in hospital. Facial swelling and a blocked feeling in the nose are expected. |
| Week 1 | The splint and stitches are removed at the check-up. Bruising starts to fade. |
| Week 2 | Most people go back to desk work and daily life. |
| Month 1 | Most of the swelling is gone. Light exercise can start on the doctor’s advice. |
| 6–12 months | The fine swelling at the tip settles and the final shape appears. |
Times are averages and vary from person to person.
Frequently asked questions
At what age can rhinoplasty be done?
Facial growth should be complete. This is usually around 16 for girls and 18 for boys. Under 18, parental consent is required.
How long does the operation take?
It depends on the nose and the planned work, but it usually takes 2 to 4 hours under general anaesthesia.
Can my breathing problem be fixed in the same operation?
Problems that affect breathing, such as a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates, can be treated in the same operation in suitable patients. This is decided after the examination.
When can I wear glasses after surgery?
Glasses should not rest on the nose until the bones have settled. The timing differs from person to person and is decided at the check-ups.
Does smoking affect healing?
Yes. Smoking reduces blood flow to the tissues and can slow healing. Stopping before and after surgery is recommended.
