What is functional nasal surgery?
The aim is to restore how the nose works rather than how it looks: letting air pass freely, warming and filtering it. A deviated septum, enlarged turbinates and a collapsing nasal valve can be treated separately or in the same operation.
When is it considered?
- Constant blockage on one or both sides
- Mouth breathing and waking with a dry mouth
- Snoring and poor sleep
- Long-term dependence on decongestant sprays
- Not getting enough air through the nose during exercise
How is it diagnosed?
The inside of the nose is examined with an endoscope and the septum and turbinates are assessed. Causes that respond to medicines, such as allergy, are ruled out. If a sinus problem is suspected, a CT scan may be requested. Surgery is decided when medicines are not enough and a structural narrowing is shown.
What is done in the operation?
These procedures are usually done from inside the nose and leave no visible scar. If needed, they can be combined with rhinoplasty in the same session.
- Septoplasty: straightening the deviated wall in the middle of the nose
- Turbinate reduction: shrinking enlarged turbinates with radiofrequency or surgery
- Nasal valve support: strengthening the area that collapses on breathing in with cartilage
Recovery
| WHEN | WHAT TO EXPECT |
|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Blockage and slight oozing are normal. Silicone splints may be in place. |
| Week 1 | Splints are removed at the check-up; crusts are cleared with nasal rinses. |
| Weeks 2–3 | Breathing starts to feel clearly easier. |
| Months 1–3 | Healing inside the nose is complete. |
Times are averages and vary from person to person.
Frequently asked questions
Does a blocked nose always need surgery?
No. Allergy and inflammation inside the nose can mostly be controlled with medicines. Surgery is considered when there is a structural narrowing and medicines are not enough.
Will the shape of my nose change?
Procedures limited to the inside of the nose do not change its appearance. If a change in shape is wanted, it is planned separately.
Will packing be used?
Most patients today have thin silicone splints that allow breathing through them; they are usually removed within a week.
When can I go back to work?
Usually after about a week for desk work. Heavy physical work and sport need a longer break.
