Common ear complaints
- Ear pain and a feeling of fullness
- Ear discharge
- Reduced hearing
- Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
- Dizziness
- Ear wax blockage
Main conditions
Outer ear infections are common in summer and after swimming. Middle ear infection (otitis media) is common in children and sometimes continues as fluid behind the eardrum. Long-lasting discharge may point to chronic middle ear infection or a hole in the eardrum.
Hearing loss can have many causes, from ear wax to problems with the inner ear nerve. Sudden hearing loss needs urgent assessment.
Tests
- Ear examination with an otoscope and a microscope
- Audiometry (hearing test)
- Tympanometry (middle ear pressure test)
- CT or MRI when needed
Treatment
Most infections are treated with drops or oral medicines. Wax is removed safely under the microscope. Children with persistent middle ear fluid may have a ventilation tube (grommet) placed in the eardrum.
A perforated eardrum, cholesteatoma and some types of hearing loss may need surgery. Surgical options are discussed after a detailed examination and tests.
Frequently asked questions
Should I clean my ears with cotton buds?
It is not recommended. Cotton buds can push wax deeper and irritate the ear canal. Ears largely clean themselves; if they block, they are cleaned at the clinic.
What should I do about sudden hearing loss?
Hearing loss that comes on suddenly in one ear is an emergency. Treatment started in the first days works better, so see an ENT specialist without delay.
Can tinnitus be treated?
The cause is investigated. If wax, a middle ear problem or hearing loss is found, it is treated. When no cause is found, ways to reduce the symptom are discussed.
What if my child has fluid in the ear?
Most cases clear on their own within a few months. If it lasts longer than three months and affects hearing, a ventilation tube may be considered.
