What are prominent ears?
They are usually caused by a fold in the ear that has not formed or by a deep bowl of the ear. They cause no health problem but can affect self-confidence, especially in children.
At what age?
The ear reaches most of its adult size by about age 5–6, so the operation can be done from school age. In adults it can be done at any age.
How is the operation done?
The incision is made on the back of the ear, so the scar stays behind it. The cartilage is reshaped with permanent stitches and a small part is removed if needed. Children have general anaesthesia; adults have local or general anaesthesia. The operation usually takes 1–2 hours.
Recovery
| WHEN | WHAT TO EXPECT |
|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | The ears are protected with a bandage; you can go home the same day. |
| Week 1 | The bandage is removed and the stitches are checked. |
| Month 1 | A headband is recommended at night to protect the ears. |
| Months 2–3 | Swelling has gone and the final result settles. |
Times are averages and vary from person to person.
Frequently asked questions
Is the scar visible?
The incision is behind the ear, so it cannot be seen from the front.
When can my child go back to school?
Usually within a week. Contact activities such as ball games should be avoided for a few weeks.
Can the ears go back to how they were?
Permanent stitches are used, so the result lasts in most patients. A small number may see partial return and need a minor correction.
Is there pain after surgery?
There may be mild pain for the first few days, controlled with painkillers.
